5 typical dance forms around the Globe

  • danceHula, Hawaii: This dance form hails from the ancient times. It was started by the Polynesians for the entertainment of the high chiefs of the Hawaiian. It is a form of offering worship to God. Over the years it has undergone certain transformations. For example the lei, which is the custom of wearing a flower necklace, were not allowed after sometime. The clothes in this dancing form typically consisted of topless women and the men often wore grass skirts and loin clothes. It is considered to be quite family-friendly.
  • Bon Odori, Japan: This dance form has been the culture of the Japanese-Buddhist from ancient times it is basically a dance associated with a festival called bon odoi. The time span of the festival is usually three days during which it is believed that the ancestors visit the family to ensure all is well.  This is basically a thanksgiving ceremony for the ancestors of the family. It is often in the form of street parades, where any passer-by can join.
  • Irish Step dance, Ireland: It is an ancient traditional dance and performed at various levels. It hails right from the pre-Christian times, these days however it become common in important Irish festivals. The originality that comes along with this dance is the traditional clothes and the Irish music.
  • Ghoomar, Rajasthan, India: This dance form is a typical mixture of rhythmic talent coupled with colourful garb. Men and women both are singers while the women only perform the dance by spinning around the room, sometimes clapping as well. It is a folk dance performed to worship God.
  • Maypole Dance, United Kingdom: It is a celebration performed by women of sex and fertility. It is usually a pagan custom. These days however, children perform the dance by wrapping around ribbons of different patterns around a pole.
